There are 100,000 Deaf British Sign Language Users in England

A survey conducted by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the Department of Health included a question within it of “Are you Deaf and use Sign Language?”

Within this survey there was also an option to complete it online in BSL, which is a huge breakthrough in understanding the access needs to Deaf BSL users in England.

It is now confirmed that there are approximately 3 Deaf BSL users in every 1,000 of the population. The density of the deaf population varies regionally with the highest density in London (5 BSL users in every 1,000)

The survey only focused on adults and so the figure will be higher when taking into account deaf children.
